Cape Breton's Wiki will be launching in BETA soon... In the meantime:

Cape Breton’s Wiki is a collaborative tool that we hope can help tell - and create - Cape Breton’s stories.

Wiki is a Hawiian word meaning ‘quick.’ On the web, it refers to a website that can be edited by its users - quickly and easily - the most obvious example being of course Wikipedia. Cape Breton’s Wiki is a type of wiki known as a “city wiki”: it's a wiki for a particular region. Think Wikipedia for Cape Breton, by Cape Bretoners: residents and ex-pats, visitors and admirers.

It combines news, stories, and information, but what makes it different is that since it’s a collaborative tool, it combines crowd-sourced data with community-sourced news.

Entries can include anything from transit schedules to municipal councillor voting records. From showtimes at the film series to Fort Mac Tarabish rules. From a list of traditional foods that can be grown in your garden in Glace Bay to community newspapers like The Turnip. From a list of wild foods that grow in the area to where to pick them and how to prepare them.

It's everything from a phone directory to a virtual community toolkit.

This front page will be a portal. It will feature hand-picked links to new content within the wiki itself, as well as content elsewhere on the web. The goal is to gather, and link to, as much of Cape Breton’s digital footprint as possible; and give visitors to the site some suggestions for entering, and navigating, that terrain.

How to

And it's easy! What’s the one thing you know better than anyone else in Cape Breton? Urban beekeeping? Wooden boats? Wifi hotspots? Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation? From Watchdogs to Dog Parks, it's all things Cape Breton.

Simply type your key words into the search bar. If an entry exists, you can edit it, and improve it; or just read it and share it. If an entry doesn’t already exist, you’ll be asked if you want to create it.

If you’re looking for, say, bike lanes, and you don’t know where the bike lane is in Cape Breton (it’s in Membertou), you can create the entry with just a title, and leave a note signalling to others that a query has been made.
